TOURNAMENT RESULTS 2009-10

GENTS PLATE CHAMPIONSHIP - 17th Mar 2010

Thanks to a bumper entry in the gents singles, we were able to run a 'plate' tournament for the first round losers but  the final match between our president Tom Watters and Dave Redpath was almost worthy of the championship. It was definitely a more entertaining match to watch as both players were very evenly matched with lengthy energy draining rallies the hallmark of this titanic struggle.

At the start of the first game, Redpath built a small lead of about 6 points and Watters slowly but surely fought back by covering the court and using extra effort to play round the head shots on his backhand side.

Several rallies were won on both sides with excellent tight net shots but high clears and fast clears were the most frequently played stroke so little wonder both players were glad of the breaks at 11 points and between games. Watters took the first game 21-15.

In the second game, Watters took a commanding lead 11 points to 5 but it was Redpath's turn to claw his way back into the game. With both players having given their all, Redpath narrowed the gap but never quite got ahead of Watters who maintained his lead to win the game and the match 21-15, 21-17.

GENTS SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP - 10th Mar 2010

The Bishop does it again (and again and again . . . . )

Sounds like a headline from the Sun newspaper but Paul Bishop has rounded off another trophy winning season by taking the Gents Singles Championship title in convincing style. Scroll down the page if you need confirmation of the titles Paul has already scooped this season.

Matt Mace was the unlucky opponent to face Paul in the final and to be honest, there is currently no creditable opposition to Paul on a singles court at JBC.

Matt has the power and the range of shots but simply lacks the physique and stamina for the singles game.

2010 Gents Singles Champion - Paul Bishop Some tremendous rallies ensued in the first game as each player prodded for weaknesses by moving their opponent about court, front to back, side to side.

Paul has a consistently good backhand return so trying to force an error from his backhand was a pointless exercise and Paul simply kept pushing Matt to the rear of the court until an opportunity arose for a kill. Matt gave a good account of himself in the first game but went down 9-21.

In the second game, Paul had no need to change his tactics and there was one gruelling rally in the very early stages of the game that took it's toll on Matt. Running close to empty, Matt made a tremendous effort to complete the game and some very good badminton took place to the delight of those watching. The outcome was inevitable however and Paul continued to force a high work rate from Matt to take the second game and the match 21-9, 21-5.

LADIES SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP - 10th Mar 2010

Annie gets her gun to claim this years ladies singles title.

With no entries for the past two years in this event, special thanks go to the ladies that entered and competed in this years singles championship We now have a new name on the trophy.  Annie Hall was an unknown quantity when she entered the singles tournament with members at the club having seen Annie play mixed or level doubles but never singles. Annie admitted she hadn't played singles for a few years but she gave a good account of herself on court against two times previous finalist Tracey Kirkpatrick.

Annie took an early lead in the first game and with a combination of winning smashes and Tracey's unforced errors, took the first game 21-14.

2010 Ladies Singles Champion - Annie Hall

The second game was a tighter affair but mirrored the first game to an extent. Annie didn't play her usual lazy backhand shots but took most round the head pushing Tracey to the rear of court.

Anything returned half court was quickly despatched by Annie.

Tracey made fewer unforced errors in the second tussle and the game was neck and neck well into double figures. A three ender was looking like a possibility as Tracey fought back hard pushing Annie all the way. Annie just had the edge with winning shots and took the second game and the match (21-14, 21-19).

JED TYRE & EXHAUST - 3rd Mar 2010

Twenty-six pairs competed in this years Jed Tyre & Exhaust tournament that was run under the same rules as last year - best of three games in each match with no team handicapping and seeds could play together if drawn. There were some nail-biters in the early rounds of this knockout tournament and new member Stuart McCredie and partner Violet Livingstone pulled out all the stops to defeat this years handicap winners Paul Bishop and Carolyn Higginson to book their slot in the final.

In the other half of the draw, Ben Rodriguez and Rob Armstrong battled their way to the final winning most of their games by a small margin. So it was one mixed pair against two gents and it was a cracking final to watch. McCredie looked as if he could run all night and did as he darted from one corner to the other retrieving shuttles fired at them by the opposition. Livingstone like a jack in the box popped at the net and with deadly effect killed anything within reach.

To be fair, Armstrong and Rodriguez played a good game but with too many high clears and lifts, they allowed the opposition to play a variety of shots forcing errors and mid court returns that were put away with vigour. Never having played together, the gent pairing tended to play sides most of the match and they were susceptible to drop shots and shuttles fired mid court between the them. The mixed pair however worked well together and played a more dynamic game to win the tournament 21-17, 21-16.

 VETERANS TOURNAMENT - 10th Feb 2010

Pictured Above: Veterans winners Violet Livingstone and Paul Bishop

40 years old and you qualify for the Veterans Tournament at Jedburgh Badminton Club.  16 sprightly players were drawn from the hat to form pairs for this round robin tournament that remains one of the favourite competitions at the club.  Handicaps were applied and it was good to see 7 mixed pairs and only one team of gents that had to carry an additional handicap penalty of 9 points against.

Seeds were identified and two pools of players formed to produce a winner and runner up from each pool. The several times successful pairing of Paul Bishop and Violet Livingstone were drawn out of the hat and were immediately labelled as the top seeds in pool 1. On paper, Tracey Kirkpatrick and Dave Redpath were slotted in as 2nd seeds and were allocated to pool 2. Again by handicap, seeds 3 and 4 were drawn and placed in pools 1 and 2 with the remaining pairs drawn to follow.

An exciting tournament was in prospect that didn't disappoint. In pool 1 the Bishop and Livingstone ran true to form winning all their matches but not before the unseeded Tom Watters and Carolyn Higginson pushed them to a close finish to take the pool runners up slot. In pool 2 the unseeded pair of John Peters and Joyce Lightbody pulled all the stops out to win their pool by a whisker with second seeds Dave Redpath and Tracey Kirkpatrick pushed in to the runners up slot.

The final was set with old hands Bishop (Last Years Veterans Winner) and Livinstone up against Peters and Lightbody who was still buzzing from her recent win in the Seedless Cup when partnered with Craig Lamberton.

In the final, Bishop and Lightbody had a great start in game one and their opponents were always trailing by a few points but it was a close game taken by the number one seeds (21-17). In the second game, a fired up Peters and Lightbody fought back and at about 12 all with a variety of short, flick and drive serves, Peters grabbed a run of 6 points from the serve to create a good margin. The opposition fought back to narrow the gap but Peters and Lightbody held on to take the second game (21-18).

With Bishop deadly from any area of the court and Livingstone killing anything around the net, a three ender was an unlikely prospect at the start of the match and Peters and Lightbody knew they faced an uphill struggle in the third and final game. Tight serving deserted the underdogs and Bishop drilled so many shots at Lightbody she should have been wearing body armour and a crash helmet. With fewer rallies and sensing the upperhand, Bishop and Livingstone drove home their advantage and won the final game and the match in convincing style to win the Veterans Tournament (21-17, 18-21, 21-10).

  SEEDLESS CUP - 20th Jan 2010

Pictured Above: 2010 Seedless Cup Winners - Joyce Lightbody and Craig Lamberton

The ‘Seedless Cup’ was first introduced at Jedburgh Badminton Club in 1995. The tournament was devised by Vaughan Hammond, an enthusiastic club member in the 90’s. Vaughan donated the cup with the stipulation that the top Lady and Gent seeds for the year were not allowed to compete in this tournament, thus ensuring some of the other players were in with a chance of winning a trophy.

Nine pairs were drawn to compete in this years Seedless Cup tournament, a knockout competition that produced some exciting and closely contested matches. With a shortage of lady players available for the draw, some of the pairs consisted of two gents but they were heavily penalised with an additional 9 points added to their team handicap.

Two of the four seeds made it to the semi-finals with Gregor Simpson and Dave Redpath pitted against Joyce Lightbody and Craig Lamberton. A close call but Joyce and Craig outplayed the two gents to book their place in the final. Myra Younger and Charlie Allison despatched Carolyn Higginson and Toney Lockey in the other semi where some exciting rallies kept the match alive.

Surprise finalists Lightbody and Lamberton charged through the first game in the final taking it 21-10. Lightbody served well and covered the net and Lamberton responded to any lifts from the opposition with powerful drives and smashes. The second game was a bit closer but with no real change in tactics from Younger and Allison, Lamberton continued to punish the opposition as Lightbody kept the shuttle alive and in play at the net. It's good to see yet another new name on the Seedless Trophy and with this being Lambertons first season at J.B.C., perhaps it's a taster of more to come.

  INTERSPORT TEAM TOURNAMENT - 17th December 2009

Normally played at the end of season, the Intersport Team Tournament was brought forward this year and played in December. The secretary put this down to having another 'senior moment' but never the less, the tournament was played in good spirits as it has always been labelled as a fun night. The Match secretary didn't query the change in date either which is also slightly worrying ;-)

Members and visitors were graded by their handicap and split into two fairly even teams. Tom Watters won the toss so had the choice of teams. The team captains John Peters (Club Captains Team) and Tom Watters (Presidents Team) then allocated their team members against the various disciplines in secret and on separate game sheets. A mixture of level doubles, mixed doubles and singles, the twist to the Intersport Tournament is that nobody knows 'who is playing who' until the two games sheets are brought together by the team captains. Some interesting matches followed as no handicaps were applied to the players and games were first to 21 points.

For the first time, visitors were allowed to play in this tournament and this added to the variety and mix of skills in the teams. Ten mixed doubles, two gents singles, two ladies singles, six gents level doubles, six ladies level doubles (and a partridge in a pear tree) decided the result. Some players were shocked to find themselves on court in a singles match (with no one else to blame) and the president Tom Watters made a welcome return to the club after injury to defend the title he won last year as captain.

The club captains team had forged a small lead after the mixed doubles and this was expanded after the singles rounds. The presidents team fought back well but never really gained the edge against a fired up (and slightly stronger) Club Captains Team.  Club Captain Peters was delighted with the outcome and the performance of his team to win this years Intersport Team Challenge Tournament.

LADIES LEVEL DOUBLES TOURNAMENT - 25th Nov 2009

Pictured Above: Ladies Level Doubles Winners - Annie Hall & Ann Wild

The Ladies Level Doubles was also an impressive affair with a few upsets in the pool matches. Top seeds and tournament winners in 2007, Tracey Kirkpatrick & Violet Livingston must have been quietly confident only to have their hopes dashed by not reaching top form and losing to both the second and third seeds.

The new partnership of Myra Younger & Joyce Lightbody  had a good innings with some close games but failed to reach the top two final slots. Lightbody was given a second chance however and was drawn to partner Margaret Hewitt and with both players giving their best it wasn't quite enough to dislodge the other pairs from their finals slot.

Christine Wylie and Carolyn Higginson waged war against Annie Hall and newcomer Ann Wild, both new partnerships in this level doubles tournament. Wylie and Higginson were runners up just losing one game in their pool but Hall and Wild had a clean sheet with four straight wins. It was second and third seeds in the final.

Wylie and Higginson raced ahead in the first game to take a lead of some 6 or 7 points but Hall and Wild fought back strongly and the first game proceeded in a nip and tuck fashion with the latter pair securing game one (21-19). The second game was closer but Hall and Wild always seemed to have the edge and they built a small lead to take the second game and the 2009 Ladies Doubles Final (21-19, 21-17).

GENTS LEVEL DOUBLES TOURNAMENT - 25th Nov 2009

Pictured Above: Gents Level Doubles Winners John Peters & Phil Halstead

With so many new members of a good standard at JBC, the Gents Level Doubles Tournament was destined to be a hotly contested affair and it didn't disappoint. Seven pairs received their match handicaps and were placed in two round robin pools of three and four. The early round  matches were nail biters with only one or two points deciding the outcome of the games.

In pool A, top seeds Paul Bishop and Scott McNeil won all their games and fourth seeds Stuart McCredie & Rob Armstrong were runners up.

In Pool B, second seeds John Peters & Phil Halstead had three matches to contend with before emerging winners of Pool B. Newcomer Craig Lamberton paired up with the ever improving Gregor Simpson and unseeded, they tore up the form book and surprised everyone by defeating third seeds Gareth McRae & Craig Pollock to emerge runners up in Pool B.

The semi-finals were set with the winners from one pool playing the runners up from the other. Lamberton & Simpson continued their run of success and defeated top seeds Bishop & McNeil (21-20). Peters & Halstead had a similar close call and just pipped McCredie & Armstrong to book their place in the final (21-20).

The final was a belter with three games needed to produce the winners. Peters & Halstead took the lead winning the first game (21-14) but Lamberton & Simpson fought back well to take the second (16-21). In the deciding game, Peters & Halstead continued their tactics of simply not lifting the shuttle and trying to maintain the attack. It was pretty much nip and tuck and until the score was into double figures. Halstead, who had played consistently well all evening stuck to the plan and forced the opposition to lift where Peters finished off the rallies with some well aimed smashes to the bodies of both players. Peters, who had his hip resurfaced n April was delighted to be back on form to reclaim this title last won in 2007 when he partnered Ben Leslie to victory.

HANDICAP TOURNAMENT  - 30TH Sep 2009

Pictured Above: Handicap winners Paul Bishop and Carolyn Higginson

Jedburgh Badminton Club held its first tournament of the season and with several new members competing, it was jam packed with action as thirteen pairs battled it out for the honours in this mixed doubles event. All the matches were close calls with just a few points separating the winning pairs in each match so only minor handicap adjustments will be required.

Short of attaching a lead weight to Mr Bishops racket arm, there's not much can be done to limit his winning form carried over from last year.

Two of the four seeds made it through to the semi-finals with Paul Bishop and Carolyn Higginson defeating newcomer Rob Armstrong who was drawn with with Joyce Lightbody. In the other semi, Denholmite Phil Halstead and Edgerston's Christine Wylie were destined to compete against Charlie Allison (Melrose) and new member Nicky Wheal. Halstead and Wylie won their semi and would face Bishop and Higginson in the final.

Both pairs fought hard in the first game and Halstead and Wylie lost out by just three points. Bishop and Higginson upped their game in the second and with Bishop attacking so many shots, the duo powered ahead to win the game and the match (21-18, 21-9)

Thanks to all who took part and special thanks to our four new members for making our first tournament a good one.

CATHERINE FINKLE MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT - 28th Oct 2009

Pictured Above: Memorial winners Paul Bishop and Violet Livingstone

The successful partnership of Bishop and Livingstone was drawn out of the hat for the Catherine Finkle Memorial Tournament that was completed on Wednesday the 4th of November. Catherine, a popular member of the Jedburgh Badminton Club died tragically in her younger years and this tournament is played each year in her memory. Number one seeds prior to the tournament commencing, this previously successful pair were odds on favourites.

Twelve pairs competed in three pools of this round robin contest with the first and second seeds making it through to the final. With each team handicapped based on individual player ability there were some very close matches. Newcomer Stuart McCredie was drawn with Tracey Kirkpatrick (second seeds) and won their pool to meet Bishop and Livingstone.

The latter pair won the first game easily (21-11) but McCredie and Kirkpatrick fought back to clinch the second (21-15). Exciting rallies were in short supply as the third game was peppered with unforced errors and wild returns from McCredie and Kirkpatrick. More consistent play from the other team gave Bishop his second tournament win of the season and Livingston her first for the year.

A few weeks of normal club play will be followed up with the Level Doubles tournament on the 25th of November.
